Clusia care: the first 90 days.
Clusia earned its reputation as the low-drama hedge — but the first three months decide how fast it becomes a wall. Here’s the routine we give every buyer.
Watering (where hedges are won and lost)
- Weeks 1–4: water deeply every other day — a slow soak at the root ball, not a spray over the leaves. In a rainy stretch, skip the days it truly pours.
- Weeks 5–8: twice a week, deep.
- Weeks 9–12: once a week, then wean off. Established Clusia is famously drought-tolerant; overwatering an established hedge causes more problems than skipping a week ever will.
The tell: leaves are thick and paddle-like — if new growth droops or yellows at the base, that’s usually too much water or poor drainage, not too little.
Trimming for density
Let the hedge settle for 6–8 weeks, then make the first light trim — an inch or two off the outer growth, flat across the face and top. Early, light trims are what turn a row of plants into a wall; hard cuts can wait until year two. Trim after a growth flush, and keep the base as wide as the top so the bottom never thins out.
Feeding
One application of a slow-release, palm/shrub-type granular fertilizer (an 8-2-12 with minors is the common South Florida choice) about 4–6 weeks after planting, watered in, then quarterly the first year. Don’t fertilize into a drought or a named storm.
The one pest to actually watch: thrips
Clusia isn’t a ficus-whitefly host — that’s a big reason the region switched — but no plant is pest-proof. Clusia’s watch-item is thrips: look for curled, distorted, or scarred new leaves. Caught early, a horticultural-oil or approved systemic treatment from any garden center handles it; catch it by checking new growth monthly. If something looks off, WhatsApp us a photo — we look at Clusia leaves all day.
Hurricane season (June–November)
- Newly planted hedges: keep root balls well-watered before a storm (hydrated plants flex; dry ones snap) and re-firm any leaned plants promptly after.
- Skip fertilizing and hard trims in the 2 weeks before peak-season storms — soft new growth is what shreds.
- Clusia’s wind record is one of its selling points; the low, dense profile of a maintained hedge sheds wind far better than trees.
What we promise — and what we don’t
We sell healthy, state-inspected plants with honest specs, and this guide is the routine that keeps them thriving. Once a plant is in your ground, sun, soil, drainage, and watering are in your hands — which is why we don’t offer a survival guarantee, and why we’d rather teach the routine than promise around it. Inspect at delivery, note anything on the ticket, and send photos within 24 hours if something arrived wrong: that part is on us.
